MSS Mission in Haiti continues to receive diplomats at its LSA2 Office Headquarters. On Tuesday 24th September 2024, Cesar Faes- Argentina Ambassador to Haiti, paid a courtesy call to MSS Force Commander Geofrey Otunge ( SAIG)
Otunge briefed the ambassador on the progress, achievements, and challenges MSS continents have encountered since their June 2024 deployment. He expressed optimism that the mission was on the right track, pointing out the recent arrival of the Caricom team led by Jamaica and Belize. He called on contributing countries who are yet to deploy to do so as the Mission is gearing toward starting the decisive targeted operations that needed all the contributing countries to be present. Otunge underscored the need for more support and funding of HNP as the mandate dictates that all security operations must be undertaken jointly with HNP who are incapacitated in terms of superior weapons and training. He hailed MSS/HNP strong collaboration that has seen several gang members arrested and many areas pacified, forcing the gangs to flee. He maintained that both night and day patrols will continue with targeted operations upscaled.
Cesar appreciated the achievements and progress that MSS has been able to make within two months while observing that more countries needed to fund and support MSS.
He revealed that Argentina supports the Mission and will ensure that it lobbies other like-minded countries to do the same. Cesar hailed the close working relationship between MSS and HNP that he encouraged to continue, pointing out that the synergy of the two entities is what is needed to defeat the gangs in Haiti. He mentioned that Argentina was ready to share their wide experience in tackling gangs, encouraging the Force Commander that the need to establish Forward Operating Bases was key to the Mission’s success. Cesar promised to spearhead further discussions and engagements between MSS and the government of Argentina, which is ready to support MSSM in Haiti.
